When I was asked to serve as the moderator of the annual LEF Trivia Bee in early October, I felt honored and happily predicted an opportunity for some fun and camaraderie. Little did I realize that the evening would provide me with something of an epiphany.

My primary responsibilities included posing trivia questions to members of competing teams who had dressed in silly finery for the occasion. Team members included parents, school board members, teachers and administrators, and representatives of a wide range of local businesses. The questions gradually increased in difficulty, and responses increased both in earnestness and creativity. The audience, comprised of hundreds of students, parents, and community members, roared with laughter and cheered wildly for the teams’ efforts.

Then somewhere during the second or third round, I had cause to turn to the crowd, to warmly admonish them to quiet down a bit so that the robed judges could hear the answers given by team members. And here’s where the epiphany occurred: as my view swept the main floor and the gallery of the historically impressive Cary Hall, there sat seemingly all of Lexington joyfully supporting the biggest show in town, public education.

This year alone the LEF and its enthusiastic support of our schools has provided, among many other initiatives at the High School: curriculum revision; interactive boards; E/scape materials; inFocus projectors; Spanish language materials; a visiting poets series; and system-wide professional development that empowers and strengthens all of us every day.

As I recognized during the Bee, the LEF and its powerful, warm-spirited momentum is emblematic of the Town of Lexington and its passionate, much-appreciated dedication to the Lexington Public Schools. We are most fortunate to benefit daily from the ongoing support of the LEF.

Thank you from all of us at Lexington High School.
