Lexington
Education Foundation puts $214K into schools--Sep 27, 2009
Lexington Minuteman
Lexington - Lexington Education Foundation (LEF) awarded almost
$214,000 in grants and fellowships to the Lexington Public Schools
for the 2009-2010 school year.
Grants were awarded in three categories: program grants, totaling
$170,533; school community grants, totaling $19,500; and summer
fellowships, totaling $23,865.
Program grants fund dynamic classroom and curriculum projects
as well as professional development, encouraging teachers to transform
their classrooms and their teaching with new and exciting ways
for students to learn.
School community grants fund smaller-scale, creative educational
initiatives or community-building activities within each school.
Summer fellowships provide teachers with an opportunity to explore
a subject in-depth by attending workshops, courses, seminars or
independent study over the summer months.
A sample of grants awarded include: the Personal Response Systems
("Clickers"), which allow teachers to immediately assess
student comprehension; iPod technology to enhance foreign language
learning and assessment; "Green Backpacks" that supplement
the fifth-grade science curriculum; "Orchestrating Kids Through
Classics," a collaborative effort with the Lexington Symphony
Orchestra that brings every third-grader to Cary Hall for a unique
concert experience; and games-based interventions for students
struggling with algebra and geometry.
