We want children to learn from teachers who are excited, engaged, and
reflective professionals. Our grant and
fellowship programs enable Lexington teachers to search for
effective, creative strategies to ensure that every child receives an
excellent education.
To help teachers improve the quality of instruction so every child can
reach his or her potential, our grant programs
-
encourage teachers to critique instructional practices and seek
solutions through innovation, research, study, professional growth,
and supporting materials;
-
support teachers who show enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity about
education and subject matter, and who think deeply about the needs
of every student;
-
seed new ideas
and approaches to teaching that demonstrate potential widespread
application across the school system

Our
generous donors make LEF grant and fellowship programs possible.
We
raise money from individuals and businesses through direct appeals and
the much-anticipated, annual community events,
LEF Trivia Bee and Educated Tastes.
We also raise money through our Staff
Teacher Appreciation & Recognition (STAR) Program, which
enables parents and students to honor teachers while supporting the
Foundation.
From time to time, we sponsor or participate in events and projects
that help educate the community about issues facing Lexington Public
Schools.
As
LEF is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, donations are
tax-deductible. LEF funds do not substitute for, replace, or
relieve responsibility for taxpayer funding of the public schools. LEF
is politically nonpartisan.

LEF publishes an annual Report on Giving that lists all donations received and all grants awarded during the fiscal year. The report is distributed each fall to all Lexington households and businesses, families with children in the Lexington Public Schools, and LEF donors. Copies are also available at Cary Library, Town Offices, each Lexington public school, and the LEF office. In addition, approximately once a month, LEF sends out an e-mail newsletter that shares news about LEF with subscribers. To subscribe to the e-newsletter, click here.

Since its founding in 1989, LEF has been governed by a non-salaried
board whose members serve for specified terms. Assisting the Board in
a non-voting, ex officio capacity are the Superintendent of
Lexington Public Schools, a School Committee member, and the President
of the Lexington Education Association (the teachers’ union). We also
depend on scores of off-Board volunteers
for help with our programs, events, and publications.
To
ensure our programs are relevant and effective, we work closely with
Lexington Public Schools. The Foundation is a private, separate
entity, however, and makes decisions independently.

Our
Advisory Board is comprised of former Board members who have elected
to continue serving LEF in an advisory capacity. We are fortunate that
many Advisory Board members were among LEF’s founding directors, and
that they continue lending us their talent and support.
