
LEF PROUDLY ANNOUNCES OUR 2005 SUMMER FELLOWS.
Ten teachers from Lexington Schools have
received mini-grants of up to $3,000 to attend conferences and workshops
during the summer, which will enhance their teaching and enliven
their classrooms. Here’s what LEF Summer Fellows will be studying
this summer:
Kimberly
Michael, 2nd Grade Teacher,
Fiske School; Pamela Michael,
4th Grade Teacher, Bridge School - These
teachers will be attending the annual meeting of the Lewis and Clark
Heritage Trail Foundation and teacher workshop in Oregon. Teacher
Kim Michael will be exploring new perspectives on the impact of
the Lewis and Clark Expedition on American history, while teacher
Pam Michael will help develop a new social studies unit on North
America, comparing the Lewis and Clark expedition with Alexander
MacKenzie’s Canadian voyage to the Pacific.
Leslie
Colby, 5th Grade Teacher, Bridge School - At
the International Readers Theatre summer workshop in England, Ms.
Colby will learn new drama techniques, including oral interpretation
and scriptwriting, to help improve students’ speaking and
listening skills. These techniques will also allow her to develop
differentiated reading instruction in her classroom and motivate
students in language arts study.
Kathleen
Glenn, Reading Specialist, Bowman School - Ms.
Glenn will be a participant in the Literacy through Drama Institute
at the University of New Hampshire. Following her summer study,
she will employ different creative techniques in drama to promote
the study of literature.
Deborah
Side, Music Specialist, Bridge School; Holly Stumpf,
Music Specialist, Harrington School - Ms. Side and Ms. Stumpf will
be attending the Hartt School of Music in Connecticut, attending
courses on both traditional and multicultural dance, song and music.
These will then enrich classroom instruction on music and movement.
Deborah
Smith Johnston, World History Teacher, Lexington High School
- After presenting a paper at the World
History Conference in Morocco, Ms. Johnston will develop new curriculum
materials and a PowerPoint presentation for colleagues on Morocco’s
role in world history.
Caitlin
Smith, French Teacher, Lexington High School - With
the goal of enhancing classroom instruction, Ms. Smith will be attending
a 4-week intensive immersion program in Tour, France, receiving
instruction in advanced linguistics, methodology and French culture.
Strategies and new instructional materials will be shared with colleagues
at LHS.
Sharon
Walczewski and Wendy Cordero, Mathematics
Teachers, Lexington High School - Ms. Walczewski and Ms. Cordero
will be attending a weeklong workshop on Fathom, powerful statistical
computer software, with the goal of improving their ability to create
visual displays, process large volumes of data and conduct simulations.
In turn, they will develop advanced lessons for students of statistics
and share the information with LHS math and science teachers.
